Local-first and organization-ready at the same time

“Local-first” and “organization-ready” are often described as opposite product directions: one is about personal control, the other about unified governance. We prefer to treat them as two different questions.

Local-first answers where data and settings begin. Organization management answers the rules by which capability is delivered. Once the two boundaries are cleanly separated, people keep control of their working environment and organizations avoid an uncontrolled spread of models, tools and credentials.

The storage boundary

In CogineWork, model settings, credentials, memory, Skills configuration and workspaces live on the local machine or in an environment the organization designates. The website does not sync any of this data, and the client does not need to upload its configuration to a public account system before it can run.

If you choose to configure a third-party model service, prompts, context or file fragments may be sent to that service. How that data is handled follows the agreement between you or your organization and the model provider. The words “local-first” should never blur that.

The connection boundary

Models, Skills and MCP can all reach external services. CogineWork’s direction is to make these sources explicitly visible, keep them off when nothing is configured, and give organizations an allowed range. Enabling a capability is then more than flipping a switch; it includes confirming the source, the permissions and the expected behavior.

The policy boundary

Organizations can use policy to limit the model range, how agents are customized, which extensions can be installed and which high-risk operations are allowed. Restricted users can still finish the work they are permitted to do, but they cannot bypass policy to write sensitive configuration.

Policy is a layer of product protection, not a remote device-control system. CogineWork currently focuses on a single-machine client and organization configuration; it does not present tenant back ends, device fleets or cross-machine governance as delivered capabilities.

Local-first gives control a clear starting point. Organization management gives capability a clear boundary. Together they make an AI workbench you can use for years and responsibly hand to a team.
